TYPICAL POSITIONS. Special agent, Uniformed Division police officer, and special officer. Clerical and administrative positions are also available.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS. Requirements for appointment at GS-5 level include (1) successful completion of the Treasury Enforcement Agent examination; (2) a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; (3) excellent physical condition; including at least 20/40 vision in each eye; correctable to 20/20; and (4) successful completion of a thorough background investigation. Appointment at the GS-7 level also requires (1) one additional year of specialized experience; (2) Bachelor's degree with superior academic acheivement; or (3) one year of graduate study in related field (police science, police administration, criminology, law, law enforcement, business administration, accounting, economics, finance, or other directly related fields).

"Superior acedemic acheivement" is defined as meeting one or more of the following criteria: (1) a B average (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) for all courses completed at time of application or for all courses during the last two years of the undergraduate curriculum; (2) a B+ average (3.5 on a 4.0 scale) for all courses in the major field of study or all courses in the major during the last two years of the undergraduate curriculum; (3) rank in the upper third of the undergraduate class or major subdivision (i.e.: school of liberal arts); and (4) membership in an honorary scholastic society that meets the requirements of the Association of College Honor Societies.

Specialized experience is defined as responsible criminal investigative or comparable experience that required (1) the exercise of tact, resourcefulness, and judgement in collecting, assembling, and developing facts, evidence, and other pertinent data through investigative techniques that include personal interviews; (2) the ability to make oral and written reports and presentations of personally conducted or personally directed investigations; and (3) the ability to analyse and evaluate evidence and arrive at sound conclusions.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS. Valid driver's license, urinanalysis test for the presence of illegal drugs prior to appointment, and the ability to qualify for top-secret security clearance.

SALARY. Specail agents are appointed at the GS-5 or GS-7 level, depending on qualifications. A high-cost area supplement ranging form a 4 percent to 16 percent is paid in specified geographic areas.
