HELP WANTED
TYPICAL POSITIONS. U.S. probation officer, pretrial services officer, statistician, defender services officer, and defense investigator.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS. To qualify for the position of probation officer at the GS-5 level, an applicant must possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and have a minimum of two years of general work experience. General experience must have been aquired after obtaining the Bachelor's degree and cannot include experience as a police, custodial, or security office unless work in such positions involved criminal investigaive experience. In lieu of general experience, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an accepted field of study (including criminology, criminal justice, penology, correctional administration, social work, sociology, public administration, or psychology) will qualify an applicant for immediate employment at the GS-5 level, providing that at least 32 semester hours or 48 quarters were taken in one or more of the accepted fields. One year of graduate study qualifies applicants for appointment at the GS-7 level, while a Master's degree may qualify the applicant for advanced placement.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS. Applicants must be less than 37 years of age at the time of hiring and be in excellent physical health.
SALARY. Appointees are typically hired at federal pay grade GS-5 or GS-7, depending on education and prior work history. experienced statisticians with Bachelor's degrees earned between $34,000 and $63,000 in mid-1998.
BENEFITS. U.S probation and pretrial services officers are included in the federal hazardous-duty law enforcement classification and are covered by liberal federal health and life insurance programs. A comprehensive retirement program is available to all federal employees.
