CAREERS IN JUSTICE U.S. CUSTOMS SERVICE
SUPPORT POSITIONS

TYPICAL POSITIONS. Criminal investigator, special agent, customs inspector, canine enforcement officer, and import specialist. Support positions include intelligence research specialist, computer operator, auditor, customs aide, investigative assistant, and clerk.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS. Applicants must (1) be U.S. citizen; (2) pass an appropriate physical examination; (3) pass a personal background investigation; (4) submit to urinanalysis for the presence of controlled substances; (5) have at least three years of work experience; and (6) be under 35 years of age. Appointment at the GS-7 level also requires (1) one year of specialized experience (for example, "responsible criminal investigative or comparable experience"); (2) a Bachelor's degree with demonstration of superior academic acheivement ( a 3.0 grade point average in all courses completed at time of application or a 3.5 grade point average for all courses in the applicant's major field of study, or rank in the upper third of the applicant's undergraduate class, or membership in a national honorary scholastic society); or (3) one year of successful graduate study in a related field.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS. Applicants must (1) be willing to travel frquently; (2) be able to work overtime; (3) be capable of working under stressful conditions; and (4) be willing to carry weapons and be able tp qualify regularly with firearms.

SALARY. Successful candidates are typically hired at federal pay grade GS-5 or GS-7, depending on education and prior work history.
