Intranet Cost Calculator

http://www.astd.org/virtual_community/comm_learntech/

This web page provides a static spreadsheet that purports to help in estimating the costs of a corporate intranet. Although the assumptions underlying this spreadsheet are not documented, you can still use it to visualize some of categories of cost for building and maintaining an intranet. (Optional: use http://whatis.com/ to find the meaning of CGI, Perl, and other terms you may not recognize.)

Questions:

  1. What is the difference between client setup and server setup?

  2. Assuming the proportions in this spreadsheet are representative, what is the approximate division of cost between setting up the technology, setting up the content, and training the users?

  3. Assuming the proportions in this spreadsheet are representative, it appears that ongoing costs (probably per year, but this isn't documented) are almost as high as the costs for creating the intranet. Try to explain why the estimated ongoing costs are so high.
