Global Trading Company Takes a Chance on IP Telephony

http://www.networkmagazine.com

Kanematsu USA is a subsidiary of a giant Tokyo-based import and export firm that deals in such diverse markets as electronics, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, and consumer products. Like many multinationals, it spends thousands of dollars a month on voice and fax calls. It decided to move part of its telecommunications from PSTN (public switched telephone network.) to IP telephony as a way to reduce costs.

Questions:

  1. Why did the article view the switch to IP telephony as a gamble?

  2. How good was the quality of IP telephony initially? Did it improve enough to replace PSTN totally?

  3. What, if anything, does this case say about the future of IP telephony?
