United Press International is a news wire service that once competed on equal footing with the likes of The Associated Press, Reuters Ltd. and Agence France-Presse. Wire services traditionally cover breaking news, feeding stories to television stations and newspapers and competing on the basis of speed and breadth of coverage. Its second bankruptcy occurred in 1992 and it brought in a new CEO in 1997 to try to remake itself.
