How easy is it to manipulate the results of a selection matrix?
Box 12.2 on page 442 explains how a selection matrix can be used to select among alternative software application packages, although the same technique can be used to compare alternatives in many different situations. The idea of the matrix is to compare alternatives by scoring each alternative in terms of important characteristics, giving a weighting to each characteristics, and comparing the sum of the weighted scores. The spreadsheet for Box 12.2 contains the data shown in Box 12.2.
- Assume the weighting of "expandability" is changed from 1.2 to 2.2. Is this enough to change the ranking of the alternatives?
- Assume that you have developed this matrix to summarize various opinions in your firm, but that for your own personal reasons you want to manipulate the result in favor of option C. Suggest a few minor, almost unnoticeable changes in scores or weightings that might tip the balance to C.
- What does the result of #2 say about the value and limitations of a selection matrix such the one shown?
