A Case Study in National Livestock Marketing

This case study of livestock auctions via telecommunications network was written by Roger Clarke and Michael Jenkins. It was published in the Journal of Strategic Information Systems in 1993.

Questions:

  1. Use the WCA framework to summarize the livestock auction system.

  2. Illustrate the steps and data flows in the system by creating a data flow diagram involving at least three processes.

  3. Identify several architectural characteristics seem to be especially important in this situation and several that do not seem to be as important. Explain why.

  4. Identify process performance variables that were stressed in the article and other performance variables that were not stressed. What were the measures of performance for these variables?

  5. Identify interesting similarities and differences between this case and the Aucnet case at the end of Chapter 3.

  6. Identify any factors that supported or hindered the implementation.

  7. Explain any ways this system might operate differently if the Internet were used and explain why you believe these differences would or would not matter a great deal.
