Let's Talk!: An Intranet for Gathering Intelligence and Facilitating Corporate Communications
http://adv.onewebsystems.com/sim/library/doc/paper2.doc
This paper won second prize in the 1997 SIM International Awards Competition. It discusses the way Maritz, a privately held consulting company with $2.0 billion
in annual sales, developed and now uses an intranet to address a prevailing corporate intelligence and communication problem. Previous
efforts to enhance communications had fallen short. The possibility of using an intranet provided a different approach.
Questions:
- What specific communication issues did the intranet address?
- Explain why it is or is not possible to think of information in the system in terms of entities, relationships, and attributes.
- How is the intranet information collected, validated, and retrieved?
- How much of the vision of for the intranet had been accomplished as of the time the article was written? What remained to be done?
- How could Maritz assess quality of the information in the intranet as part of its process of expanding the intranet over time?
