Obstacles when applying IT in the real world

Smarting Over Smartcards

http://www.wired.com/news/news/business/story/16048.html
Visa, MasterCard, Chase Manhattan Bank, and Citibank said Tuesday they were pulling the plug on a 14-month pilot project in which approximately 100,000 smartcards were issued to Upper West Side residents to use at more than 600 local stores. Technically, the program was a success. Its main aim was to test whether Visa Cash and MasterCard's Mondex cards could both be processed by the same terminal. But the experiment angered merchants who found the system too cumbersome, and didn't excite consumers. (Another version of this story is used in one of the "additional cases" for chapter 1)
Y2K problem (intro)
Most of the Y2K links are listed under Chapter 13, but here is a list of potential Y2K problem dates. This shows that the Y2K problem is not totally concentrated around Jan. 1, 2000. Y2K concerns have become so widespread that they even earned a place in the jokes page of this web site.
