Internet Exercise Instructions for
The INTERNET BRIDGE

Internet Exercises within the Long and Long INTERNET BRIDGE for any book or i-book are organized by topic (for example, Telecommuting, Printers, Serendipitous Surfing: The Movies) within each chapter or Focus on IT section (colorful, special interest boxes). A chapter or Focus on IT section has from one to seven topics.

To do the Internet Exercises, follow this procedure:

  1. Click on the "Internet Exercises" button in the options bar at the top of the page to get a list of topics by chapter.

  2. Click on and select the desired chapter/section to navigate to a chapter/section page

  3. Or, as an option to 2 above, click on and select the desired topic to go directly to the topic page.

In the chapter page:

  1. Click the desired topic's hyperlink (the underlined topic name).

In the topic page:

  1. Identify the Internet Exercises you would like to do. Typically you are asked to do some, but not all, of the exercises.

  2. For each exercise:

    • Read the exercise.
    • Navigate to the applicable Internet site(s). The Search Tools page is made available through the Long and Long INTERNET BRIDGE. Each Internet Exercise lists several keywords that can be used in conjunction with these search tools to help you get started. Also, each exercise lists one applicable site. This site may, or may not, contain the information needed to solve the exercise problem. Frequently, it points to other sources or contains some of the needed information. Note: Remember, take time to "smell the roses." If you see something interesting, check it out. You can always retrace your steps to the topic page by clicking on the "Back" button.
    • In the response box, note the source(s), title(s), and URL(s).
    • Find the requested information.
    • Return to the topic page (click the "Back" button as needed) and enter the requested information in the response box.
    • Repeat the above process for each exercise.

  3. Upon completion of the Internet Exercises for a given topic:

    • Complete the e-mail information boxes at the end of the exercises for a given topic and click the "Submit for Grade" button. Note: Only your name and the Internet exercises you've answered get submitted. Blank response boxes are ignored.
    • To do the Internet Exercises for another topic in the same chapter, click the "Back" button as needed to navigate back to the active chapter page.
    • To do the Internet Exercises for another chapter orFocus on IT section, return to the main page for Computers, 6th Edition (or other book, as applicable) and select another chapter.

Hints for completing the Internet Exercise response box.

Enter three pieces of information in each response box: source title, source URL, and answer.

The source title is the name at the top of the home page (for example, Long and Long INTERNET BRIDGE), and the URL (uniform resource locator) is the address specified in the Internet link (for example, http://www.prenhall.com/long). Generally the answers are short and can fit within the box in their entirety. The response box, however, can accept a substantial number of lines, even though only a few lines are visible. To go to a new line in the response box, tap "Enter". If you need to review the Internet Exercise, simply click the "Back" button (left arrow) as needed to return to the topic page; then click the "Forward" button (right arrow) as needed to return to the source page.

Although you can click the "Back" button on your Internet browser to navigate back to the topic page and enter the response, you might save time by opening a new Web browser. To do this, click "File", "New Web Browser" for Netscape or click "File", "New Window" for Internet Explorer. Maintain your INTERNET BRIDGE Internet Exercise Page in one browser and do your searching/research in the other; then toggle back and forth as needed.

If, while cruising the net, you get lost and have trouble navigating back to the active topics page--keep looking, especially if you have entries in the response boxes. Avoid reloading the topics page because you will loose the text you've entered in the response boxes. If you create your answers in a text editor or word processor as described above, you will avoid this problem.

Submitting Answers

You can submit Internet Exercise answers to your instructor/grader and to yourself. Only the exercises with answers get submitted. Blank response boxes are ignored.

Name Entry: Enter your name and other applicable information, such as course number and lab section (for example, Pat Smith, CIS 101, Lab 13). This information is e-mailed with your answers to the address specified in the grader's e-mail box.

Your e-mail: This entry is optional. If you include your e-mail address, your answers will be sent to you as well as to your instructor. When you receive the e-mail, copy it to a file or print it out for backup.

Grader's e-mail: Enter the e-mail address for the person who will grade and record your answers. Your instructor/grader will make this information available to you. Take care when entering this address or your mail may be lost forever in cyberspace.

Submit Answers Button: Click on the "Submit Answers" button to send the Internet exercises and your answers to the e-mail address specified for your e-mail (if any) and grader's e-mail.
