Windows 95 Lab Projects

Complete and turn in the following Windows 95 projects as directed by your instructor.

  1. Windows 95: Windows 95 Tour
    1. The Windows 95 CD-ROM contains a Windows 95 Tour. Insert the Window95 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive and click on Start button, then Help, then Tour: 10 Minutes to Using Windows 95. Click on the Windows 95 Tour option and begin the tour.
    2. Repeat the entire tour (all five modules) until you feel comfortable with basic Windows 95 concepts.
    3. In the Starting a Program module, what letter is on the close button?
    4. In the Exploring Your Disk module, what are the three program icons in the To Do folder?
    5. In the Find a File module, what is the date on July Report document?
    6. In the Switching Windows module, what is the name of the bar at the bottom of the screen?
    7. In the Using Help module, the three tabs in the Help window are Content, Index, and what else?

  2. Windows 95: Help Feature
    1. The Windows 95 Help feature explains how to accomplish common Windows 95 operations. Acquaint yourself with this handy feature by clicking on Start button, then Help, then, if needed, select the Contents tab. In the Contents tab select (double click) How To, then select Use Help.
    2. Select Finding a Topic in Help and read about it. Click on the Help Topics button to return to the Help display.
    3. If you have some familiarity Windows 3.1, Select If you've used Windows before in the Contents Tab to view a comparison between Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 (see Figure 1). If not, go on to part d. Read through the explanations and view the illustration by clicking the appropriate buttons on the left.
    4. What should you try first if you get a message stating that you do not have enough memory to run a program. Hint: Try Troubleshooting in the Contents tab.
    5. Explain how you would create a new folder.
    6. How do you print an open document in a Windows 95 program?
    7. How do you move the taskbar, which is normally located at the bottom of the screen? Reposition the taskbar to the opposite side of the screen, then back to its original location.
    8. How do you set up a screen saver? Hint: Start with Change Windows Settings. Select a different screen saver of your choice.

  3. Windows 95: Playing Games
    1. Start the Solitaire program by clicking the Start button, then Programs, then Accessories, then Games, then Solitaire.
    2. Read the rules of the game (Help, Content) and other information as needed.
    3. In the Options dialog box (Games, Options), choose Draw Three, Vegas, Timed game, Status bar, and Keep score.
    4. Select the robot deck (Game, Deck).
    5. Begin play. Note your score and elapsed time at the end of the game (bottom right corner).
    6. Close Solitaire (Game, Exit).

  4. Windows 95: The Calculator
    1. Start the Calculator program by clicking the Start button, then Programs, then Accessories, then Calculator.
    2. Display the standard calculator (View, Standard). Review Help as needed.
    3. Sum these numbers: 95, 51, 22, 49, 78, 62, 5, 38. Note your result.
    4. Divide 14499200 by 36248. Note your result.
    5. Close Calculator (click the close button).

  5. Windows 95: WordPad
    1. In the Accessories Folder, start the WordPad application.
    2. Enter the following sentence: "Windows 95 WordPad is a word processor that you can use to create and print documents." Use the arrow keys, delete key, and backspace key to edit the text, if needed.
    3. Save the sentence as SENTENC1 to the root directory on your work diskette (File, Save).
    4. Print the sentence (File, Print).
    5. Close WordPad.

  6. Windows 95: Creating Folders and Program Icons
    1. Close all open windows and insert your work diskette. Open the Explorer (double-click on short-cut icon on desktop) or select the Windows Explorer (Start, Programs).
    2. Select the floppy disk icon, then in the File menu, select New, then Folder. Enter My Folder to create a new folder called My Folder.
    3. Click on My Folder to highlight it, then select New in the File menu. Select Shortcut and create a Shortcut that will run the Calculator application. Enter c:\windows\calc.exe in the Command Line and Calculator as a name.
    4. Select (double click) the Calculator icon in the My Folder folder. Compute the cost of attending State U. for a semester. The tuition at State University is $3,200 per semester. Other expenses during the term include housing ($2,000), food ($800), books, supplies, and fees ($500), and miscellaneous ($500).
    5. Delete the Calculator shortcut (choose the calculator icon and tap the delete key). Close the Explorer.

  7. Windows 95: Using Notepad, Cardfile, and Paint
    1. WordPad and Calculator are Windows 95 applications (both introduced in previous exercises). Other Windows 95 applications include Notepad, Cardfile, and Paint. Select the Accessories Group.
    2. Select Notepad and use the Help feature to learn more about it. Enter the following sentence: Windows 95 Notepad is a text editor that you can use to create and edit text files. Use the arrow keys, delete key, and backspace key to edit the text, if needed.
    3. Save the sentence as SENTENC2 to the root directory on your work disk (File, Save). Print SENTENC2. Close Notepad.
    4. Select Cardfile and use the Help feature to learn more about it. Add three cards (Card, Add). Label each with a name (real or fictitious) and include address and phone information.
    5. Save the card file as NAMEADDR to the root directory on your work disk (File, Save). Print the entire NAMEADDR card file (File, Print All). Close Cardfile.
    6. Select Paint and use the Help feature to learn more about it. Experiment with the tool kit by creating a drawing. Note: The Graphics Lab Project contain more exercises for Graphics programs.
    7. Save your drawing as MYPAINT to the root directory on your work disk (File, Save). Print MYPAINT (File, Print).

  8. Windows 95: Using the Windows 95 Clipboard
    1. Close all open windows. Tapping the Print Screen key (Alt+Print Screen) to capture the screen image. The clipboard now contains an image of the Program Manager that can be pasted to a Windows 95 application.
    2. Open Paint and paste (Edit, Paste) the contents of the clipboard to the drawing area.
    3. Use the pick tool (top right in tool kit) to outline the My Computer icon (drag cursor between opposite corners). Cut the outlined area to the clipboard (Edit, Cut).
    4. Get a new drawing area without saving the current image (File, New). Select Image in the main menu, then Attributes. Change the drawing area to 1 inch by 1 inch. Paste the contents of the clipboard to the drawing area (see Figure 2).
    5. Save the image as IMAGE.BMP to the root directory of your work diskette, then print it. Close Paint.
    6. Click on the Clipboard Viewer in the Accessories folder to view the contents of the clipboard (see Figure 2).
    7. Run WordPad and paste the contents of the clipboard to the work area. Under the image, enter My Computer Icon (see Figure 2).
    8. Save the WordPad document as MYCOMPUTER.DOC to the root directory of your work diskette, then print it. Close WordPad.
