CHAPTER 11 Information Systems: The MIS, DSS, and EIS
The FBI's InfraGard The Federal Bureau of Investigation's most recent effort to combat cybercrime is called InfraGard. The program offers a secure way for member organizations to communicate with one another. Each member organization undergoes a background check. Currently, over 500 companies participate in InfraGard, but this number is expected to grow dramatically as cybercrime threats increase. Cybercrime cases have tripled in the past three years.
Identity Theft Identity theft has increased markedly over the past few years. Identity theft occurs when one person gathers information about another and assumes his/her identity, usually for the purpose of fraud or some other criminal activity. Until a recent study by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the information technology community had assumed that identity theft increases could be attributed to the availability of personal information on the Internet. According to the study, however, less than one percent of all reported cases can be linked to the Internet. Most identity theft is a result of lost wallets or purses, or of mail theft.
