CHAPTER 14 Computers in Society: Tomorrow

Online Voting on the Horizon The Florida election problems have prompted lawmakers and entrepreneurs to seeking solutions to our antiquated system of voting. It is now apparent that U.S. cities, counties, states, and the nation need a better way to elect candidates. Several companies and consortiums claim that the U.S. could implement a standardized, federally-supported online voting system that would be easier to use, more accessible, more accurate, far more reliable, verifiable, and more secure. Plus, the results would be posted internationally in real time. Other countries, including Brazil, and even states, including Arizona, have conducted online elections. Unisys, Microsoft, and Dell have joined to work on creating a new voting system. IBM's Institute for Electronic Government is proposing a system too.
