CHAPTER 11  Information Systems: The MIS, DSS, and EIS

Professors Fight Back  Some universities and professors contend that plagiarism in colleges is getting out of hand. Now, there are web sites, such as Plagiarism.org that can compare student papers to those available from free online "cheating" sites. The site returns the results of the scan to the professor, highlighting phrases that should be checked more carefully. Some anti-plagiarism services, such as Essay Verification Engine (EVE), are rather sophisticated. For example, the systems are designed so that they can identify potential areas of plagiarism even when words have been changed. The professor ultimately is responsible for determining whether the student has plagiarized the work of someone else. Anti-plagiarism companies charge a nominal fee for their services (usually less than $1 per student).
