CHAPTER 4 Storing and Retrieving Information: Disks and Tape Backup Units

Video-on-Demand: A Beginning Several companies are now testing pay-per-view movies distributed over the Internet. Miramax Film studio is offering "Guinevere" for $3.49. The 1999-release movie (about 500 MB) can be downloaded in about half an hour to an hour over a broadband connection, such as cable or DSL. The pay-per-view fee is good for 24 hours. After that the downloaded movie file is of no value. Perhaps video-on-demand is inevitable over the Internet, but the success of these test offerings will determine how quickly it will be installed. As you can see by the size of the movie file, the corporate world has a plan for your excess disk capacity.
