CHAPTER 6  Networks and Networking: Linking the World

DSL vs. Cable  The technologies leading the way for broadband Internet access via the home are DSL and cable (via cable modems). The race to determine what technology and what companies will prevail in the delivery of high-speed digital information into the home is being closely watched because of its long-term potential. Ultimately many of our products and services will be delivered via high-speed digital access to the Internet, or whatever it might be called in a few years. At present DSL, which started late and is delivered over twisted pair telephone lines, is closing the gap with the widely used cable modem access.
