CHAPTER 7 Going Online: The Net, Information Services, and More
Where People Go on the Internet Have you ever wondered about which are the most popular sites on the Internet. Here is the Media Metrix Top 50 for the United States as of last month.

Internet Growth Pew Internet and American Life Project tracks the growth of the Internet by type of user. The results of a recent survey indicated dramatic increases in the Internet population for all race, age, income, and educational attainment groups when comparing the first half to the second half of 2000. Generally, men, women, whites, African-Americans, Hispanics, parents, and nonparents grew by 7 to 11 percent during this six-month period. Regards age cohorts, the fastest growing population was the 18-29 group, going from 61 percent to 75 percent. Those users over 65 grew from 12 percent to 15 percent. People earning less than $30,000 grew from 28 percent to 38 percent. The over $75,000 income group went from 79 percent to 82 percent. The latter is less dramatic, but Internet penetration is high among this group, as it is among those with college degrees, also at 82 percent.
