September 2000 Technology Update: Computers 6/e

CHAPTER 14 Computers in Society: Tomorrow

For-Profit Higher Education Expanding With the recent addition of Harcourt Higher Education there are now four for-profit institutions in the United States that offer college degrees entirely online. At these schools, students do pretty much everything online from admissions to in-classes discussions with professors and other students to graduation. The newest school, Harcourt Higher Education, hopes to have an enrollment of about 20,000 within five years. That is larger than many major century-old bricks and mortar universities. Over 1000 traditional colleges now offer courses or degrees online.

The Internet Economy According to Forrester Research the Internet economy is expected to be about $7 trillion in 2004. According to their projections, the United States will have almost half of the Internet pie, the Asia-Pacific countries and Western European countries would have a little more than 20 percent each, and the rest of the world would split the remaining 9 percent.
