The relationship between any two numbers, expressions, lists, or matrices can be compared by selecting one of the options. A 1 will be returned if the test is true and a 0 if the test is false. For example, the test, 4 > 7, returns a value of 0 since it is a false statement. Tests can also be made on statements such as

x = 9 or x < 2.5

The result of such a test depends upon the value of the variable x. This type of comparison is often used to control the domain over which a graph is drawn. See the note at the bottom for an example.

When comparing lists and matrices, each element in the first list or matrix is compared to its corresponding element in the second list or matrix. For example, note the results of the following comparison between the two 3 element lists.

The first two comparisons are true, while the third is false.

Note: The type of operators that are compared must have the same dimension. For example, a list of 5 elements can not be compared with a list of 6 elements.

To graph a function over a domain, first press to type in a function.

Now put parentheses around the entire function and multiply it by each restrictions raised to the -1 power ( ).

When the statements are true it simply multiplies the function by 1-1 or 1, but when either of the restrictions is false the TI-86 will try to calculate 0-1, which is undefined, and cannot graph a value for that part of the function.
