Newsgroups

The following is a brief description of newsgroups and a list of several that you might find interesting.

Configure Your Browser

This is only a partial list of the available biology newsgroups. To view them, you will need to configure your browser with the address of the news server available to you. If you are connecting from your school campus, ask your computer support group. If you are subscribing to an online service, request technical help from its service group. In either case, the process of configuring your browser is minor once you have the address of your news server. If you are using Netscape's Navigator 1.1N or greater, you can configure the news server through the Preference selection under the Options menu.

Once your browser is configured, you will be able to read and respond to any of the newsgroups subscribed to by your server administrator. If the administrators of your news server do not subscribe to one of these newsgroups, ask them to include it.

The Basics of Newsgroups

Newsgroup names describe the topic of discussion. You will find that some newsgroups are interesting and some are not. Subscribe to several of the groups and eavesdrop on their conversations for a while before you jump in. This will give you some experience with the general attitude of the group and may prevent some embarrassment on your part. You should also read the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) and any postings directed to new participants in the group.

For a detailed description of newsgroups, you should refer to the student guide, Biology: Life on the Internet by Andrew Stull, that was packaged with Life on Earth by Audesirk and Audesirk.
