preface

This book presents all those aspects of technical communication that you, as a technician, technologist, engineer, scientist, computer specialist, or technical manager, are most likely to encounter in industry. It introduces you to the employees of two technically oriented companies, to the type of work they do, and to typical situations that call for them to communicate with clients, suppliers, and each other.

Since the earlier editions of Technically-Write!, changes have occurred in the way that correspondence and reports are written at both companies (H. L. Winman and Associates in Cleveland, Ohio, and Macro Engineering Inc. in Phoenix, Arizonasee Chapter 2), and these changes are reflected in this fifth edition. Where previously Anna Kingthe companies technical editoredited reports typed from handwritten drafts, now she edits them online, calling them up from files keystroked by the engineers and engineering technicians at their individual computer terminals in both cities. To prepare you for such a writing environment, Chapter 1 suggests techniques you can use to outline and write directly on a computer.

As before, the book contains numerous examples of letters, reports, and proposals, all based on the unique "pyramid" method for structuring a document, a technique that has helped countless technical people overcome "writers block."

To meet the demands of todays workplace, in Chapter 3 we have introduced new sections on writing effective electronic mail and designing information so that readers attention is drawn immediately to key issues. In Chapter 10 we have included a section on writing electronic online resumes. Then, to acknowledge the shift to an increasingly global business environment, in Chapter 11 we have inserted a new section on writing for an international audience, an audience for most of whom English is probably a second language. In the same chapter we have also included a section on writing non-gender-specific language, plus the seven guidelines for forming technical abbreviations, etc, that previously were included as a separate chapter with the glossary. The Glossary of Technical Usage is now a stand-alone section at the end of the book.

Along the way, we have very much appreciated the friendly advice and many helpful suggestions from users of the book, both teachers and students. Their ideas have guided us in preparing this fifth edition. We are also celebrating, for its 26 years since the first edition of Technically-Write! was published, and its also the first time the book has had two authors.
