Identity Matters:
Rhetorics of Difference

Lillian Bridwell-Bowles is a professor of English language and literature, director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of Writing, and a faculty affiliate in Women's Studies and the Center for Advanced Feminist Study at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Campus. She is also co-director of the Minnesota Writing Project, a collaborative of writers and teachers committed to improving the teaching of writing at all levels, and a past chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, the international scholarly and professional organization for teachers of writing.
Her first book, New Directions in Composition Research, outlined the emerging field of composition studies in the 1980s; her more recent work focuses on characteristics of writing in various fields, rhetoric, and the teaching of writing. Her book published by Prentice Hall (1998) is a collection of essays on rhetoric and diversity entitled Identity Matters: Rhetorics of Difference.
In the fall of 1999, she will co-chair the 2nd Biennial International Conference on Feminism(s) and Rhetoric(s) at the University of Minnesota. Bridwell-Bowles' research interests include 1) rhetorical theory, with interests in the historical treatment of women's speech and writing and the language practices of women rhetoricians; 2) writing across the curriculum, including writing in fields as diverse as engineering, social sciences, businesses and professions, and the arts; 3) linguistics, particularly gender issues; 4) issues of race, class, and gender in writing instruction; 5) composing processes of writers; and 6) analyses of "new," experimental, or undervalued textual forms, alternatives to conventional rhetorical patterns.
