Randall A. Wells, of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, is the author of Along the Waccamaw: A Yankee Discovers a Home by the River (Algonquin, 1990). A professor of English and Speech at Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina, he studies at Maryville College in Tennessee, the University of Illinois-Urbana (B.A.), the University of Connecticut (M.A.), and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (Ph.D.). Previously Wells taught at the University of Wyoming, Northern Illinois University, and Alcorn State University in Mississippi.

While directing the Coastal Area Writing Project, he helped to lead the university's writing-across-the-curriculum effort, and as director of the Horry County Oral History Project, he produced several videotaped programs based on interviews.
