Searching The Blair Handbook Index

In addition to the built-in search features of your web browser and the Acrobat Reader plugin, we have provided another way to search The Blair Handbook Index.

Keyword Search

To use the keyword search, type in the word you are looking for and then click on the Search Index button. For example, if you are looking for information about using commas, type comma. This will take you directly to the most important Index listings for comma.

NOTE: This search feature works on keywords only. Not all words in the index are included in the keyword list. If you do not find what you are looking for using this keyword search, try using your web browser's built-in Find feature (see below.)

Searching The Blair Handbook Table of Contents by Rule

Rule Search

To use the rule search, type in the rule you are looking for and then click on the Search by Rule button. For example, if you are looking for rule 40c, type 40c and click on the Search by Rule button. This will take you directly to the page with that rule.

Searching the text on a web page

Both Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer provide tools for searching the text of a Web page. When you are in either the Table of Contents or Index, you can use these tools to quickly look up any subject listed in either one.

Netscape Navigator
In Netscape Navigator, go to the Edit menu and select Find in page.... You can also use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+F on a PC or Command(Apple)+F on a Macintosh (press both keys at the same time.) A dialog box will open with an area to enter the text you want to search for, whether or not you want the search to match the case (i.e.: all upper case), and the direction you want to search on the page (if you've just entered the page, you will want to leave this setting to the default direction "Down"). Type in the text that you want to find and press the Find Next button. Navigator will find the first instance of the text on the page and automatically take you to it. If you want to find the next instance of the text, press the Find Next button again.

Microsoft Internet Explorer
In Microsoft Internet Explorer, go to the Edit menu and select Find. You can also use the keyboard shortcuts, Ctrl+F on a PC or Command(Apple)+F on a Macintosh (press both keys at the same time). A dialog box will open with an area to enter the text you want to search for; you can have Internet Explorer to match the whole word only, (i.e.: you typed in "comma" and only want to search for "comma," not commas), you can search to match the case (i.e.: all upper case), and, you can choose in which direction you want to search the page (if you've just entered the page, you will want to leave this setting to the default direction Down). Type in the text that you want to find and press the Find Next button. Internet Explorer will find the first instance of the text on the page and automatically take you to it. If you want to find the next instance of the text, press the Find Next button again.

Searching the text within an Acrobat Reader file

When you have a chapter of The Blair Handbook open in Acrobat Reader, you will see two binoculars on the Acrobat Reader navigation bar.

These correspond to the Find and Find Again functions of Acrobat Reader. Find, also accessible by pressing Ctrl+F on a PC or Command+F on a Mac, allows you to search for a word or phrase within the currently open Acrobat document. After using Find, you can use Find Again to search for the next instance of the word or phrase you have searched for.

NOTE: Using your Web browser's controls will either not work within the Acrobat Reader plugin (for example, you cannot use the browser's Find function within the Acrobat Reader file) or it will close the plugin and navigate you back to the regular Web pages of the Companion Website (for example, the browser's Back button will take you back to the menu where you chose the Table of Content, Chapter, or Index search).
