Lynn Quitman Troyka
earned her Ph.D. at New York University and taught for many years at the
City University of New York (CUNY), including Queensborough Community
College, the Center for Advanced Studies in Education at the Graduate
School, the graduate program in Language and Literacy at City College,
and, as Senior Research Associate, in the Instructional Resource Center,
CUNY.
Dr. Troyka is an author in composition/rhetoric for the Encyclopedia
of English Studies and Language Arts, Scholastic, 1993, and in basic
writing for the Encyclopedia of Rhetoric, 1994. Former editor of the
Journal of Basic Writing (1985-88), she has published in journals
such as College Composition and Communication, College English,
and Writing Program Administration and in books from Southern
Illinois Press, Random House, the National Council of Teachers of English
(NCTE), and Heineman/Boynton Cook. She has lectured at hundreds of colleges
and universities and at national and international meetings.
Dr. Troyka is the author of numerous textbooks, including the Simon
& Schuster Handbook for Writers, Fifth Edition, Prentice Hall,
1999; the Second Canadian Edition of the Simon & Schuster Handbook
for Writers, 1999; Structured Reading, Fifth Edition, Prentice
Hall, 1999 (co-authored with Joseph W. Thweatt); and Steps in Composition,
Seventh Edition (with Jerrold Nudelman), Prentice Hall, 1999.
Dr. Troyka is a past chair of the Two-Year College Association (TYCA)
of NCTE; the Conference on College Composition (CCCC), the College Section
of NCTE, and the Writing Division of MLA. She was named Rhetorician
of the Year in 1993, was given the Nell Ann Pickett Award for Service
in 1995 by CCCC and TYCA. She chaired the mid-1990s Task Force on the
Future of CCCC, currently chairs the CCCC Project Mentor Committee;
and is on the NCTE Leadership Committee for the Preparing Future Faculty
(PFF) project of the Council of Graduate Schools and the American Association
of Colleges and Universities.
