Prentice Hall presents the Sixth Edition of one of the most widely-adopted introductory psychology textbooks on the market. It is well-known for its pioneering focus on the development of critical thinking skills crucial to students' success in college and in later life. It is also widely regarded for the liveliness, warmth, and clarity of its writing style, and continues its tradition of integrating gender, culture, and ethnicity throughout the text while providing a comprehensive introduction to the field.
Features of the New Edition:
NEW-All new design and art program. New, bold, contemporary design incorporates more pedagogical graphics, photos and figures to capture students' attention and help them study.
NEW-Psychology Interactive Center Website. Provides students and faculty with a dynamic companion website tied carefully to the text as well as access to the Psychology Place where students are encouraged to actively pursue additional information.
* Critical Thinking Emphasis-Authors Carole Wade and Carol Tavris were the first to focus on the development of critical thinking skills in introductory psychology. Chapter One provides a substantial section on this topic, presenting eight essential guidelines students should consider when evaluating information:
- Ask Questions: Be willing to wonder
- Define your terms
- Examine the evidence
- Analyze assumptions and biases
- Avoid emotional reasoning
- Don't oversimplify
- Consider other explanations
- Tolerate uncertainty
These guidelines reappear in the margins of the text as Critical Thinking Signposts, pointing out some of the places where critical-thinking analyses or issues appear. Each Signpost poses a provocative question that draws students into the discussion in the text and prompts one of the eight critical thinking behaviors above.
* Get Involved Active Learning Applications-Several Get Involved exercises appear in each chapter and promote active learning by encouraging students to perform an activity that reinforces what they've read in the text. By creating student learning experiences, the authors reinforce learning by giving students an opportunity to demonstrate for themselves what the text has described.
* Quick Quizzes-These study and review sections appear at the end of major sections of each chapter and offer students an opportunity to check their learning. Answers appear upside-down within these sections so students can quickly discern the accuracy of their answers. Questions vary in format, incorporate humor and real-life examples, and periodically include critical thinking items. Also makes the text easily adaptable to the SQ3R method of study.
* "What's Ahead" and "Looking Back" features. Major chapter sections open with a set of provocative "What's Ahead" questions designed to create interest in the material to come, and function as advance organizers. These questions are revisited at the end of the chapter in the "Looking Back" section, which provides students with an opportunity to test themselves.
* Taking Psychology With You. One of the most popular features of this text is the end-of-chapter application feature, Taking Psychology With You. Topics draw upon research in the chapter to offer practical strategies and ideas for dealing with everyday problems and situations. NEW-Review Summary Tables-These study aids appear periodically throughout to summarize, compare and contrast various theories, methods or approaches described in the text. Helps students synthesize and organize the material they've read.
* Other pedagogical features include:
- Marginal glossaries
- Numbered summaries
- Key terms with page numbers
- Chapter outlines
