Donald Knuth's book The TeXbook, Volume A of the Computers & Typesetting series published by AddisonWesley, Reading, MA, 1984, contains an appendix with a good treatment of hyphenation issues.
Interleaf Publisher, FrameMaker, and PageMaker all use this concept of a book as an organizational tool. Corel Ventura Publisher uses the concept of a publication for the same purpose. Of course, they all treat this concept somewhat differently.
