Appendix A . Resources

"All I know is just what I read in the papers." -Will Rogers

An amazing variety of services and software available to help you in virtually any electronic publishing task. The information in this chapter will lead you to these sources. It is categorized into a number of useful topics. In addition the conspicuous lack of Web resources is because the Web itself is a much better source than any printed document. Simply go to one of the Internet Starting Points and look around a little. (See Section 1 . 9 Internet Starting Points in Chapter 1 World Wide Web for pointers to these sites.) Inclusion in this chapter is by no means an endorsement of the specific company or product, just an attempt to save you some legwork and make your life a little easier.

Clip Art

Clip art seems like a simple enough topic. You wouldn't think of having too many kinds. But hard as it may be to believe, there are all sorts of clip art categories. Funny, serious, industrial, medical, borders, textures, 3D, and so on, are some of the many varieties of clip art you can buy.

From a technical point of view, the format of the artwork is the important factor. One critical distinction is whether the artwork is scalable (EPS is scalable) or not. If the ability to scale the image is not important, just go with a convenient format, assuming you're satisfied with the content, of course. Most important, is a determination that you can use the clip art with your publishing software.

If you're concerned about producing documents with everyone else's "same old clip art," you can try the subscription approach. Subscription clip art services provide monthly supplies of clip art. These services provide up-to-date topical or seasonal art for a price.

Not exactly clip art, but worth knowing about, is the existence of special papers for laser printers. Colorful gradations and patterns can be used for dramatic impact. Certificates, and awards, already embossed and ready for the laser printer, are also available.

There are also two YAHOO catagories for Web access which are at:

SGML Content Modeler
Creating SGML DTDs is not a trivial task. Teaching other people is even more difficult. This is exactly where the SGML Content Modeler comes it. Created by Tommie Usdin formerly of the ATLIS Consulting Group, it consists of a series of jigsaw puzzle pieces. The pieces of the puzzle are labeled with a number of document elements, such as Book, Front, Chapter, and Section, and can be connected together with pieces that specify whether the elements are required, optional, or repeatable. The modeler is available from GCA.
SGML the Movie (see SoftQuad entry under SGML)
A campy, informative video introduction to SGML. This videotape is a light introduction to the basic concepts of SGML with a nonthreatening humorous style. It's light on technical content but useful for the uninitiated (for example, managers). Produced by SoftQuad, Inc., it's always a pleasure (and much too rare) to see an explanation of technology that doesn't take itself too seriously.
CDROM bonus - this movie is on the CD-ROM accompanying this book as a series of QuickTime files.

Network Connectivity

You don't have to be a student or employed at a large corporation to enjoy the variety of information sources available on the Internet. You can actually just pay for it. There are literally hundreds of "ISPs" Internet Service Providers pick up any computer related magazine for a list. The vendors listed are not necessarily good for your needs and are present merely to help you get started.
