Overview

The purpose of this multimedia CD is to present the key concepts of physical assessment that are useful in the clinical management of clients with cardiopulmonary problems. It is our aim that the student nurse on finishing this program will have a solid foundation on which to base her assessment of the client with cardiopulmonary disease. Auditory and visual displays of heart and lung sounds are provided in time expansion mode to aid in discerning the details of the sound. Illustrations of the mechanisms of production of heart sounds are also shown in a Murmur Mechanism Guide to facilitate learning. Self-testing is included so that confidence in performance can be developed. We believe that the CD will also be useful to nurses with more advanced training who want to “brush up” or to fill voids that may be present in their knowledge base. Our multimedia approach will be particularly valuable in this regard.

How to listen to the sounds

In order to use this software, you are required to have a Macromedia Flash Player installed on the computer. Please refer to the "System Requirements" sections for instructions on how to install the Flash Player. The sounds on this CD are of high quality and closely resemble real sounds heard though the stethoscope. Heart sounds are low frequency sounds. We strongly recommend that headphones be used for listening to this CD. To make sure that your headphones are capable of reproducing the heart sounds we are providing the following test. Please playback the following three tones.

Example of 600Hz
Example of 150Hz
Example of 35Hz

If you were unable to hear any of the 3 tones you are NOT likely to hear an accurate reproduction of the heart and lung sounds.
