Chapter 3 - Project Management

  1. Would you recommend using COTS software for project management at MRE? Think about some of the security concerns in the interview with Hill. Would COTS software be adequate for some of the new initiatives that MRE is proposing?

  2. Using the principles of agile development, which of the four resource control variables would you considering sacrificing when constructing the GEMS system? Explain in a paragraph. Think about the need for quality and a high degree of accurate, reliable information.

  3. Explain in a paragraph which of the four agile development resource control variables would you considering sacrificing when constructing the Ecommerce system (refer to the JAD session in the Silver interview)?

  4. Create a problem definition for the GEMS system. Be sure to include at least two requirements (think about Hill's need for security and Ketcham's concern that the system will run on different types of computers), at least one constraint, and at least 5 issues and objectives. Create weights based on how you feel the user community would weigh the issues. Refer to the Hill, Hyatt, Evans, Smith, and Ketcham.

  5. Calculate the function point count for the Ecommerce System (hint: there is some valuable information in Evan's office). Use the function point count to estimate how many months it would usually take to finish a system using the following languages:
    a. COBOL (second generation language).
    b. Java (third generation language).
    c. Ruby on Rails (fourth generation language).
