Fingerprint Identification Technology
For chapter 15

Concerns regarding computer security range from the protection of large mainframes and servers from outside hackers to the protection of individuals´ accounts from unauthorized access to the protection of individuals´ computers from unauthorized use. To help fight the latter of these issues, several companies have developed security systems that can be purchased by individuals and organizations.

For less than $100, Compaq offers a fingerprint recognition system called Fingerprint Identification Technology. Used with your personal computer´s video camera, this software requires you to press your finger against the camera lens. If the software recognizes your fingerprint, you will gain access to the computer. Similar software is also available that videotapes the camera´s viewing area while the screen saver is running. While you are away from your desk for a prolonged period of time, anyone who enters your office is videotaped. If someone tries to gain access to your computer, they will surely be caught on video. You can then play back the video file when you return to your office. The system is transparent to individuals entering your office since the screen saver is always running.
