The Cover Letter

Don¡t underestimate the power of the cover letter. This is your first test by the law firm to see whether you can write. Using a canned letter will not get you very far because potential employers have seen the same letters over and over. Try to be original and write each letter according to the job specifications and how your skills and education fit that job.

Cover letters generally follow a brief but standard format. It¡s not necessary to write a lengthy letter reiterating what can be found in the resume. There are three basic areas to cover in your letter:
Paragraph one: What position you are applying for and where you found it.
Paragraph two: Why your skills and work history are compatible with the position.
Paragraph three: Your availability and how best to contact you.
