References and Writing Samples
By Chere B. Estrin

You will need at least three professional references. If you don¡t have professional references because you haven¡t worked before, it is okay to use your professors. If you have held an internship through your paralegal school, you may also want to use that supervisor. Personal friends do not count as professional references.

If you are an experienced paralegal, you¡ll want to prepare a writing sample of a document you personally prepared. Make certain that all confidential information is redacted (blocked or erased). That includes names, dates, places, file numbers and anything else that might identify the parties in the matter. If you are a student, use a document that you wrote in one of your classes. One that received an excellent grade and has the instructor¡s comments on it (i.e., great job!) is best.
