In this video, the accomplishments of a truly remarkable young woman, Jessica Parks, are highlighted. Born without arms, she has accomplished more than many individuals without disabilities, and far more than her parents, physicians and educators could have imagined. Educators (including special educators) often predetermine in the minds what children with disabilities will or will not be able to accomplish, and limit their access to educational programs. This is often a mistake, which can even lead to lawsuits. In this video, we can see why the courts will almost always side with the student and their parents if the schools refuse to allow the student the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to perform in a general education class.
