Example of Chapter 9 Introduction: Planning
for Fulfilled Employment

Setting the Stage: Reviewing and Applying Knowledge
You Have Gained

Having all this new knowledge greatly enhances your understanding of
careers and what you need to do to reach fulfilled employment. Now,
Employment Opportunity provides you with a comprehensive
framework to directly apply what you have learned. Follow the steps
listed below, and enter the resulting information in the Planning
Worksheets
provided at the end of this chapter. For the most part, you
will be utilizing or updating information already developed for the Data-
Speak and Career Inquiry
tasks of previous chapters.

Example of Chapter 9 Planning Step

Step 6: Assess the Rewards of Occupations Selected.

Review Chapter 6 Data-Speak and Career Inquiry Worksheets and the
procedures used to produce them. Return to Employment Opportunity
Database
Occupational Living Standards -- and Appendices F and
G, and once again consider the standard of living that meets your needs.
Of course, we would all like to be millionaires. However, the point of this
planning section is to identify the income level that will satisfy you...make
you feel that your investments in human capital have paid off. Now, see
if the income usually provided by your selected occupations will support
an acceptable standard of living. While it's not feasible to quantify, also
describe and consider the non-monetary rewards you deem likely from
practice in a chosen occupation. What is the depth of satisfaction that
you will feel from performing the mission of that job? If the rewards
don't measure-up, once again, drop the questionable occupation and
replace it with a better fit. Document this process in Planning
Worksheet 9F.

With your selected occupations in mind, return to Chapter VI and
review the Career Income Principles relative to your occupational
choices. Also, consider these principles and how they may impact your
path to fulfilled employment. Record your ideas on the appropriate
section of Planning Worksheet 9F.
