Nostalgia - When I was a lad (back in the dark ages of IT...the 1960s!), my friends and I dreamed of being doctors, lawyers, scientists, firemen, astronauts, police officers or military officers. We vaguely knew computers existed (my father's company had a large mainframe on which I used to play chess)...
What About the Dot-Com Crash? - A scenario that is probably playing out in homes all across the nation (based on recent conversations I have had with prospective students) goes as follows: Parent: "You need to begin applying to colleges soon. What do you want to do with your life?" Student (age 18): "Well, I love computers. I want to be a computer game designer!..."
The Fat Lady Isn't Singing! - She is not even humming a tune at this point. Information technology is everywhere and is critical to all business operations, not just to the dot-com companies. The failure of the dot-com companies was primarily due to poor business planning...
The Future - Let me pull out my crystal ball. Computers and computer systems are so pervasive in our lives today that I cannot see any possible outcome but an increase in our reliance on computing in the future...
