Chapter 1: Careers in Information Technology
WITHIN THIS SECTION:
| Nostalgia
- When I was a lad (back in the dark ages of IT...the 1960s!),
my friends and I dreamed of being doctors, lawyers, scientists,
firemen, astronauts, police officers or military officers. We
vaguely knew computers existed (my father's company had a large
mainframe on which I used to play chess)... |
| What
About the Dot-Com Crash? - A scenario that is probably
playing out in homes all across the nation (based on recent conversations
I have had with prospective students) goes as follows: Parent:
"You need to begin applying to colleges soon. What do you want
to do with your life?" Student (age 18): "Well, I love computers.
I want to be a computer game designer!..." |
| The
Fat Lady Isn't Singing! - She is not even humming a tune

to all business operations, not just to the dot-com companies.
The failure of the dot-com companies was primarily due to poor
business planning... |
| The
Future - Let me pull out my crystal ball. Computers and
computer systems are so pervasive in our lives today that I cannot
see any possible outcome but an increase in our reliance on computing
in the future... |
