Myth #4 - I Got My Diploma. Boy, I'm Glad All That Education is Over!

A diploma on top of a stack of booksPeople with this attitude never cease to amaze me. Technology is a relentless taskmaster in that it is changing every day. You must run, not walk, to keep abreast of it. Therefore, in an IT career you will be in an almost constant learning mode for the rest of your career. There will always be new software, hardware and technologies to master. This will require intensive study, either on your own or through additional formal training. To remain a valuable employee you will need to update your skill set on a regular basis. This concept is often referred to as life-long learning.

Not everyone is comfortable with life-long learning. Certain individuals find learning to be a chore and dread the prospect of going to classes and studying. Be honest with yourself...if this describes you then consider another career. There are plenty of professions where you don't constantly attend school and face new challenges (teaching history springs to mind). An IT career is not for everyone...thank goodness! Imagine what a boring world it would be if we all had the same career interests. A world totally full of tax accountants or house painters would get old very fast!
