Attractive Aspects of Teaching
- Satisfaction from helping others Knowing that
you are making a difference in the lives of other human beings
is a very satisfying feeling.
- Scheduling fits well with child rearing A
teaching schedule is naturally the same as a students
schedule. Therefore, your teaching schedule should mesh well
with your own childrens schedule. This should provide
you with maximum flexibility to participate in your childrens
activities (summer and school holidays off, etc.).
- Passing on your own motivation to learn Teachers
are usually predisposed towards learning. Motivating students
to learn and watching them grow as they do can be very enthralling.
As you share your interest of current events and draw from
your general knowledge (as it applies to the subject matter
at hand), this should encourage students to explore their
world (books, movies, television, the Internet) and increase
their knowledge base.vii
- Job security In most states, full-time teachers
achieve "tenure" after working for a specified time
period. Tenure is a contractual obligation that translates
to an almost ironclad guarantee that you will have a job year
after year for the foreseeable future. Although you could
still lose your job even after attaining tenure, it becomes
much less likely.
- Collegiality Constantly being exposed to other
educators and exchanging ideas and information with peers
is comforting to many educators. There tends to be less competitiveness
in teaching than in other professions (such as the legal profession
where you must attract and maintain a customer base). This
promotes a freer exchange of ideas between colleagues than
is often present in the business world.viii
