  • Intelligent Enterprise Magazine – Per their web site, "Intelligent Enterprise is the first information resource for business and IT leaders that focuses on corporate information as a strategic platform for business advantage." This publication was somehow related to DBMS Magazine, which is no longer published. However, they do maintain DBMS Magazine archives on their web site. (www.intelligententerprise.com).
  • DM Review Magazine – A business intelligence publication which covers e-business, customer relationship management and data warehousing spanning all major industries. (www.dmreview.com).

  • Searcher: The Magazine for Database Professionals – Gee, I think the title of this publication says it all. (www.infotoday.com/searcher/)

  • DB2 Magazine — A quarterly offering from CMP. Online content abounds and you can get a free subscription to the print version if you qualify. (www.db2mag.com)

  • SQL Server Magazine — No surprises here…a magazine about SQL Server. Web site features archives and online content. (www.sqlmag.com)

Web Sites

  • Oracle Technology Network (www.otn.oracle.com) – An Oracle Corporation-sponsored site that provides tips, tricks, white papers and various research materials to assist aspiring Oracle DBAs.

  • Underground Oracle FAQ's (www.orafaq.com) – A site, not affiliated with the Oracle corporation, that provides FAQs, scripts, tips, news, message forums and chat boards to those folks who are interested in or working with Oracle databases.

  • MySQL (www.mysql.com) – An open source database product for Linux and UNIX platforms that is available free of charge! The company claims that the software is running on over 2,000,000 servers worldwide. An interesting alternative to Oracle or SQL Server for those who are interested in open source solutions.

  • SQL-Server-Performance.com (www.sql-server-performance.com) – This site provides tips for tuning and optimizing performance of Microsoft SQL Server databases.

  • Microsoft Access Official Website (www.microsoft.com/office/access) – Contains tricks, trips, templates and software updates for Microsoft Access.

Professional Associations

  • The International Oracle Users Group (IOUG) – Their web site can be found at www.ioug.org. They provide training, advice, forums and book reviews to members.

  • The Oracle Applications Users Group (OAUG) – Dedicated to users of Oracle business applications. They promote education, networking, communications and information sharing among their members. You can find them at www.oaug.org.

  • The International DB2 Users Group (www.idug.org) — This group sponsors conferences and forms regional users groups to foster communication between DB2 professionals. They also publish the IDUG Solutions Journal triannually. The web site contains discussion forums and links to DB2 resources.

  • Professional Association for SQL Server (www.sqlpass.org) — A professional organization, much like IDUG above, but focused on SQL Server.

  • Database Processing: Fundamentals, Design, and Implementation, 8th Edition, David M. Kroenke, Prentice Hall, 2002, ISBN# 0-13-064839-6. A well-written introductory database theory textbook.

  • Access 2000 for Windows: Visual QuickStart Guide, Deborah S. Ray and Eric J. Ray, Peachpit Press, ISBN 0-201-35434-9. Getting right to the point, this book focuses on the key aspects of Access 2000. Clear illustrations support the text.
  • SQL for Dummies, Allen G. Taylor, Hungry Minds, Inc., ISBN 0-764-50737-0. Does a good job of explaining the design of SQL databases in simple terms. Although it does start off with a chapter on relational databases, reading about relational database theory prior to reading this book will help you get more out of it.

  • SAMS Teach Yourself DB2 Universal in 21 Days, Susan M. Visser & Bryan Gambrel, Sams, 1998, ISBN# 0672312786. A solid introduction to the DB2 database presented in 21 easy to digest lessons.
