College may be the most stressful time of your life. People who have been out of college 10, 20 years say they STILL have dreams of being late to take their final exams, or of being back in college, naked in the classroom. This is indicative of the intense emotional pressure being put on college students to perform, within very rigid guidelines and expectations. Sometimes the stress can become overwhelming; this is where stress reduction techniques come into play. A dependable resource is your College Counseling Center. Some have psychiatrists available at no charge; peer counseling may also be available, along with multimedia resources that may really "speak" to your particular anxiety. Your church counselor or "clergyman" is available to you also.

Insomnia is the plague of college students. Lack of sleep can make you disoriented, not "yourself", and is destructive to your emotional health. If you suffer from insomnia, try milk (it contains tryptophan, a sleep aid), or natural sleep aids such as Melatonin. A healthy exercise routine can lead to a good night's sleep.

Along with academic instruction, college should be fun. "The best years of your life". It is a period of growth, of change, and of lifelong commitment to education. There may be a semester where you bite off too much; it is not a crime to drop a class that has become too demanding, or to stretch your college career out an additional year. It is better to go at a slower pace than to experience "burnout". Take the time you need to learn what you came to college to learn and get the most out of it.
