SUCCESS IN THE REAL WORLD: Gerald Blankson

This graduate of Overland College in Ohio currently enjoys his job as a tutor in the Upward Bound program that specializes in helping low income students with adjusting to the college experience. He graduated in four years with a Psychology and African-American Studies degree. During his free time at school he enjoyed playing basketball and tutoring students. His decision to attend Overland was made easier by their offer of a full ride in the form of an academic scholarship. Although he wished that his school was larger (his had 3,000 students), he appreciated the extra attention that was allowed to him because of small classes. The hardest adjustment for him was learning to prioritize his time because he played football. He recommends that all incoming students try and do some type of activity because it forces you to use your time wisely which is a skill that many incoming freshman lack. He feels that sports really taught him the value of discipline and made him realize how precious time really is. His favorite professor during his time at Overland was a professor named Calvin Hernton because of his unique teaching style of incorporating stories to make his point. His advice to incoming high school seniors is to not hold back in anything they may want to try in college because the years go by fast and opportunities pass by quickly.
