One Student's Journey

Welcome to Chi-Omega Land

Yup, Rush is finally over, and I couldn't be happier with the results. It's been a hellish two weeks, but it was so worth it. Remember the sorority I was gushing over last week? That's Chi-O. I'm now a sorority girl. That's something I never thought Id hear myself say.

In high school, I wasn't ever sure if I would want to Rush. Most of my friends planned on it, but since my best friends are usually guys, I thought I'd almost be better off getting a sex change and joining a fraternity (okay, maybe being a frat's little sister would have been better.) I was wrong -- very wrong. And thank God I was.

Getting back to the actual topic of this column, the third round of Rush reminded me of that Monty Python sketch, "And Now for Something Completely Different." Instead of having a bunch of generic conversations, the sisters entertained us with songs and skits about their sororities. The parties were a little bit longer than usual, and everyone seemed to have a good time... but the cuts continued after the round, as always.

Fourth round was also something completely different. We only went to three parties each -- I went to Chi-O, Delta Gamma (DG), and Alpha Phi. At each party, the sisters got up and talked about what their sorority had meant to them. We also performed a little ceremony at each, and the sisters cried -- as did I. (I think I might have been the only pledge that cried... then again, I cry at the drop of a hat!) Chi-O was my first party, but even without going to the others, I knew I had to be one of them. I was actually shaky after the party. And although I enjoyed the other parties and was happy to see my friends in those sororities, I couldn't stop thinking about Chi-O. I never thought I'd find other girls with whom I could identify so much, but that's what I found.

Sunday morning, I found out that they felt the same way about me. All through the dorm, girls were screaming and running up and down the halls with bid cards in their hands. Bid Day started at four o'clock, when all the girls went to their respective sororities and got doted on like crazy. Many of the girls (including me) are still walking around in their new t-shirts. They gave us all kinds of crazy stuff, took us out to eat, and gave us our schedules for the coming weeks -- am I ever going to be busy! Parties almost every night, pledge meetings, retreats... wow.

So that's the end of that. Now I only have selective house rush... and elections for the Chronicle... and the tent, which people are starting to get bitchy about... and class (ugh)... and this column. Oh, and sleep. I think I'll go on and get that over with now.
