They Came, They Saw, They Choked
I've never been the type to say, "I told you so"... but my God, who wouldn't say it after last weekend (except Carolina fans?)
Unless you were completely oblivious to the world of college sports this weekend, you already know that Duke beat the hell out of Carolina, 77-75, at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It was the most phenomenal thing I have ever seen. Why? It was Coach Ks 500th win. It was Dean Smith's birthday. It was our last home game of the season. It was between the two biggest rivals in college b-ball history. We were ranked #1 in the AP poll. They were #3.
Oh, and did I mention that we only led the game once? And that was in the last minute of it? And that Carolina had more than 5 chances to score in the last 3.8 sections?
The stadium was packed -- even some of the tenters couldn't get in, due to a big mistake made by our stupid head line monitor -- and for the last 1/4 of the game, it was total mayhem. I couldn't even hear myself think. The buzzer sounded, and for a moment time stopped as we all struggled to realize what had just happened. Then it hit. The entire student section swarmed the courts, and order didn't come back until well into the wee hours of the morning. I got knocked down, but just like the team, I dragged myself back up -- and straight into the arms of Roshown McLeod, our senior forward whose basket at the end of the half gave us our only lead. After a big hug for him, then Jay Heaps, then J.D. Simpson, I found myself almost bawling on the court, still screaming and barely able to breathe. Turns out I wasn't the only one -- a little baby named Okulaja from UNC was so mad about losing, he hit one of our students and sent him to the emergency room.

After the game, we all crowded onto the Main Quad, where giant foam machines, a light show, and a disc jockey all contributed to a Woodstock kind of atmosphere. I had no intentions of getting in the mud with the dozens of students who were rolling around it, dancing in it, and generally getting foamy... but after the first guy threw me in, it was all over. Four more guys threw me in during the course of the afternoon. I was covered in mud... and beer (go figure, the entire campus was drinking that afternoon.) By 9:15, I had decided that enough was enough -- after all, the game got out at 4:00, and for some reason everything seemed really blurry. But when I arrived back home, I realized how early it was. "I have a duty to myself to go back over," I thought. The fact that I was covering the party for the Chronicle was also a factor... so it was off to the showers I went. After a large bag of popcorn and a nice, hot shower, I was back in full form. So I headed back to West Campus to watch the scene.
And what a scene it was. We've always had bonfires at Duke when we win big games, and this was no exception. The problem was that the administration banned bonfires this year, and the police were out in full "safety gear" -- helmets, masks, et cetera. We didn't seem to care. At least seven dorm benches went up in flames. People got arrested left and right. A chair from a commons room got set on fire. And everyone was cheering it on. Even Shane Battier, our star freshman forward, was out and about, enjoying the scene. He gave me a hug -- you can imagine how that felt. God, I love this school.
This was why I came to Duke, really. Sure, the academics are great, the people are wonderful, and the campus is gorgeous. But the atmosphere last night -- a mix between Gotham City and the Roaring Twenties -- was what I've been waiting for. And you can bet your butt that when we win the ACC tournament and the national title, Ill be right back at the parties. And more benches will burn. |
