Going to Class
In a previous column, I remember saying that my dorm's theme song might end up being "Beethovens Fifth." I have changed my mind. That song is now reserved for classes and the resultant homework which never gets done.
Yes, class started up this week.
The first one I went to was a philosophy seminar. Imagine, if you will, about 15 college students around a table debating whether humans have a purpose, and there you have my class. You think I'm kidding? On Thursday, we discovered the meaning of life. (Of course, I can't reveal it, because then I'd have to kill you.) It really is a fun course, despite the high-flown language and constant intellectualism. It's more like sitting around the dinner table and having a debate rather than actually going to school.
The University Writing Course is pretty much the same type of thing. The first day, our instructor (a grad student in Cultural Anthropology) walked in and announced that despite the course title, we really weren't going to do much writing. So far we've spent a lot of time just talking about past experiences. I think I'm going to like that course.
Then there's Greek history. It seems like a great class, but I knew there might be problems when I picked up my textbooks last week and found eight of them for that one class. Our first assignment is to read the Iliad - yes, the entire thing - by September 24. I wonder if that's going to happen? But the professor is incredibly cool and forgiving of all the typical freshman mishaps, such as sleeping through class, so it shouldn't be a bad situation at all. |

In fact, I've been very pleased with all the profs, even though they're all different. My calculus professor, the only female in the group, is like no one I've ever seen. This chick is too excited about functions! The course itself is proving to be a very good idea - we're using the same textbook I had last year in calculus. Can't complain about that, can I?
So overall, class isn't too horrible. If I can just get myself to do the homework it will be even better. My friends next door make me look terribly slack. Every day I walk in there, one of them has a book open. Now, I do open my books occasionally, but to actually read them, well, that's impressive!) I guess it's because it's still technically summer. At least that's what I keep telling myself.
In fact, why am I writing this column when I could be reading Homer? I'm out of here. |
