There is Room for the Commuter to Get Involved
Commuter students need to be involved in campus life just as much as students living on campus. Not living on campus can make getting involved a bigger challenge, but getting involved does not have to be cumbersome. It is extremely important for a commuter student to become "connected" with the campus. It can become very easy to come to campus, go to class and head back home. Don't get yourself in a rut; spend some quality time enjoying the many benefits of campus life.
If you are living at home with your parents, make sure you discuss with them how studying, going to class and becoming involved in some aspect of campus life will have an impact on your available time to help out around the house. Since you may not be able to do as much during the week as you are used to doing, you might need to offer to do a little extra on the weekends.
Get yourself "connected" to campus. If your campus has an office for Off-Campus Student Services, this is a great place to start. Many colleges maintain listings for off-campus housing; this is a great way to find a new place to live or find a new roommate. There may even be a student organization just for commuter students that you may choose to join. Remember, being involved has shown to have a significant impact on academic performance. Students involved in campus life, on the average, make better grades. You will also meet new people and probably have some FUN at the same time.
